Retirement Isn't the Finish Line. It's the Beginning of the Hardest Financial Decisions You'll Ever Make

For decades you've done exactly what every financial book, television expert, and retirement calculator told you to do.

Work hard. Save consistently. Invest wisely. Watch your accounts grow.

Then one day you retire, and suddenly everything changes. The goal is no longer growing your wealth. The goal is making it last.

Unfortunately, this is where many investors discover that the advisor who helped them accumulate assets isn't necessarily the advisor best equipped to help them spend those assets. Those are two very different professions.

Accumulation is largely about building wealth through disciplined saving, appropriate investment allocation, and long-term growth. Retirement changes every assumption. Your portfolio must now generate income while continuing to grow enough to offset inflation and support withdrawals.

Retirement management involves coordinating Required Minimum Distributions, taxes, Social Security, Roth conversions, healthcare costs, travel goals, charitable giving, and changing income needs.

The financial advisory industry traditionally has been built around helping clients accumulate assets. Firms serving retirees often face slower asset growth because their clients are spending what they spent decades saving. That different economic reality means retirement-focused advisory firms operate under a different business model.

Turnkey Asset Management Programs (TAMPs) provide valuable investment management and operational efficiency, but retirement often requires far greater flexibility. Retirement planning is not just selecting a model portfolio. It is deciding where withdrawals come from, managing taxes, coordinating RMDs, and adapting spending as life changes.

You wouldn't ask your family physician to perform heart surgery. Likewise, retirement income planning deserves a specialist.

When interviewing an advisor, ask one simple question: Do you primarily help people build wealth—or do you primarily help people live on the wealth they've already built?

At CochranMickels Retirement Specialists LLC., retirement isn't a department within our practice. It is our practice. Because after spending thirty or forty years building your retirement, the years you spend living it deserve just as much expertise.
