I wanted to share with you the progress of Makayla.  She received a scholarship to shoot on the Montreat College Clay Target Team.  She finished the season recording the team's high score in sporting clay's with an 84, placing second among all ladies for this event. In the skeet event, Makayla went 95/100 placing first among the women. After a shoot-off to determine the overall individual women's champion, Makayla finished with a strong second place. During this season, Makayla has collected a pair of individual wins and now a second-place result.  These are awesome accomplishments, all while attending college.  In case you haven't read her story, here is the blog from last year!!

This post is a departure from our usual.  I wanted to take an opportunity to introduce you to a young lady who is just started her quest to become an Olympic shooter and get on the US Shooting Team.  Her name is Makayla Scott and she is from White Sulphur Springs West Virginia.  She is just 16 years old and has been shooting competitively for 3 years.  One of her most amazing achievements to date is that she and 4 of her teammates are in the Guinness Book of Records for the most targets broken,14,167 in 10 hours.  She is a tough competitor, and I am sure we will hear more about her.

But what really grabbed me was her story.  She lost her mother at age 9 to a drug overdose.  All too often, drug and alcohol addiction is classified as a victimless crime.  Tell that to Makayla and her siblings.  Makayla made a decision not to let that get her down.  I can understand why she chose shooting and the outdoors, it always has been my place to get centered, recharge my batteries so that I can face all of the challenges that life throws at me.  Most of the time, it is the only activity that I can do where I can shut the noise of the world off.

Shooting competitively gets expensive.  There is the shotgun, shells, targets, travel, tournament fees and lodging.  Makayla has started a GoFundMe Page so that she can compete in more events across the Nation with the goal of attending the Olympics one day. You can also learn more about her by visiting her FaceBook Page Makalya Scott Shooting.  Laura and I will be following her progress, we might even get to meet her in person at a tournament this year.  In any case, we hope she continues to win in shooting sports and life!
